“Characters for an Epic Tale” by Tom Gauld
47 U. MAJORIS STAR SYSTEM—Roughly 18 months after discovering the collection of common Earth sounds contained on the golden record placed aboard the Voyager probe NASA launched in 1977, extraterrestrial Richard Ellinger, 237, admitted Friday he still hasn’t gotten around to listening to the whole thing. ”The wind, rain, and surf sounds are pretty cool, but I usually sort of zone out when it gets to the crickets chirping, and then I just end up turning it off,” said Ellinger, adding that he will sometimes put the record on as background noise when he’s cleaning his electro-biological habitat. ”And to be totally honest, I almost always skip that track with the mother kissing her baby. It’s like, ’Who cares?’ you know?” Ellinger said he plans on taking a few things he likes off the record—such as the traditional Peruvian wedding song, the humpback whale calls, and the tractor noises—and throwing them on a mix with some Elvis Costello classics.
Only a matter of time before some alien version of Girl Talk just remxies the highlights anyway.

Whilst on a Radiohead kick, watch this. Myxomatosis, always one of my favorites. Is it just me or are lyrics clearer in this performance? Or maybe Thom’s performance is so captivating you become more at one with the song itself?

Go to about 0:43 and listen for 20 seconds, sound familiar? Radiohead sampled a 1975 Paul Lansky computer composition for Idioteque. The sampled song itself is quite the electronic composition.
It uses FM synthesis, which had just been worked out at Stanford, and later became the staple of Yamaha’s DX7 series of synthesizers, and also a special purpose filter design program written (in Fortran IV) by Ken Steiglitz. Oh yes, the harmonic language of the piece is related to George Perle’s 12-tone modal system. George and I had been collaborating for the past four years or so on theoretical developments in this system. The piece is based on the ‘tristan chord’ and its inversions, hence the title. I worked out a multi-dimensional cyclic array based on this chord as the harmonic basis of the piece. - Paul

Essentially, saturated fat does not cause cardiovascular disease. Lam, my 4 eggs are fine.

Fats are essential for many bodily functions including metabolism and brain function. Best estimates are that congestive heart disease (arterial clogging) comes from too many blood sugar peaks brought on by over consumption of sugars, carbs and starches at rates higher than your body can control their effect on blood sugar and perhaps over consumption of calcium which is a also component of arterial clogging.
